It's good to sit around and pontificate on what good leadership should look like, but what do we do when we observe poor leadership? Do we deal with it? Or do we let it spread like cancer, affecting both people and the organization's overall culture? Suppose we decide to stand by as innocent bystanders when we are simple spectators. In that case, we allow the environment to be corrupted.
The question is, what role do we play when we see bad leadership? When we see leaders that are manipulative and disrespectful and aggressive and abusive, what do we do?
Often, we feel as though there is nothing we can do. We think that the system itself is corrupt and eroded that no one would be of high moral ground and able to deal with this. But if the organization is that corroded, why would we want to be a part of it?
Some organizations are tainted from the top down. Other organizations, on the other hand, just have a management problem. That is, your immediate manager, the leader to whom you report, is ineffective. And we've been oblivious to the fact that, on the way to the mountain top, some are already there, others are in the middle, and some are at the bottom. The person on top of the mountain is frequently separated from what's going on in the middle, let alone what's going on at the bottom. The same holds true when discussing organizational management. The person you're responding to might not be doing their job, but that doesn't always reflect what's going on at the top. `
