I recently spoke to an old friend who mentioned that he was having trouble making a change in his life. When I asked why he was having trouble, he answered that it came down to feel. He knew he had to make a change, but when he would take the necessary steps, it didn't feel as satisfying as he wanted it to be.
We often think that just because we decide to do something, we will be celebrated, but it isn't the case. Confetti won't fall from the sky, nor will this massive external shift occur when you decide to take action. It may not even feel good! But this isn't about feeling it; it's about necessity.
Doing the work that greatness requires isn't always fun, but it's necessary.
Falling in love is an extraordinary feeling. However, most individuals won't do what is required to keep that spark alive. Don't believe me? Take a look around and see how many people have failed relationships or marriages. Regardless of whose fault it was, the work required to keep that spark alive wasn't done. It doesn't always feel good, nor does it feel comfortable, but if we don't do the necessary work, we will end up with broken hearts and empty promises.
Likewise, you may say you want to grow, but if you do not do the necessary work (even when you don't feel like it), you will not see the outcome you desire. It isn't always fun, and it isn't always easy, and we don't always feel like doing it, but we must.
We must because we understand that greatness is a calling. And greatness is that authentic version of us that lives in us, waiting to come out. And this only happens when we do the work, even when we don't feel like it.
