superpowers
One day my daughter Razielle came up to me and said: “Dad, kids have a superpower that adults don’t have.” My question was, “what is that superpower?” And she replied - “imagination.”
Razielle and I got into this conversation as she said, “kids can imagine things that adults can’t and see worlds that adults cannot.” I asked her, “why do you think that is” to which she replied, “because adults work a lot.” “But wait a minute.” I said, “you and I play imagination; why do you think some adults have difficulty with imagination” and she reiterated, “because they work a lot.”
“I think there’s actually another reason,” I said. And Razielle looked at me and asked me to explain what it could be. She and I went into a nice conversation about the inner child and how many adults have silenced their inner child.
The Inner Child
The inner child is that sense of wonder that we all have. That inner child welcomes the sense of amazement we felt as children. It’s the excitement of not knowing what’s around the corner but knowing that whatever it is will be fantastic. After a while, it appears as if we’ve realized that what’s beyond the horizon does seem to be merely a challenge or a struggle, not something spectacular. What if we adjusted our mindset and chose to think that something special could emerge even in the midst of adversity?
We often silence our inner child, not because we work a lot, as Razielle would explain. However, because it requires being able to reimagine during the difficulties.
To reimagine
To reimagine during the difficulties is to believe that something greater can come out of your situation. More specifically, it only requires you to look two steps ahead. Strategizing looks at the macro; that is, how many steps it takes you to achieve your objective breakthrough. On the other hand, reimagining requires looking at the micro and your next two steps.
The inner child is silenced when we refuse to reimagine the possibilities and choose to see a positive outcome. We don’t need to see the entire outcome, just what the next two steps could be and produce.
big picture purpose
To imagine is to elevate your mind to a new possibility. Alternatively, reimagining is to be in a difficult moment and still see a positive outcome due to the next two steps. Imagination looks at a big world of possibilities, whereas reimagining simply looks at the following two steps you'll need to take.
Do you want to awaken your inner child? Think about the next two steps that you need to take to benefit your big picture purpose.
Our purpose should be divided into two parts: the macro and the micro.
The macro is the big picture purpose, whereas the micro is the things that we do daily that will get us to our macro purpose, to our big picture purpose. If we can reimagine a positive outcome even in the face of adversity, we will be one inch closer to seeing our big picture revealed. Remember the Polaroid pictures? They too needed to be shaken in order for the picture to be revealed.
