Often, we forget that time is a currency we cannot get back.
Sometimes meetings are treated as a family reunion, asking everyone about everything that has nothing to do with precisely what the meeting is about. While there should be a particular moment of gathering and actually conversing, creating relationships helps strengthen everyone's role in making the organization better and focusing on the vision; however, if a meeting has been scheduled, the idea would be that time would be appropriately managed.
A mismanaged meeting takes all the energy away and takes away the focus; it not only takes away the focus but also makes it difficult for some individuals to refocus on the task. Therefore, there should be a schedule on what that meeting will be like. Minute to minute, what individuals can expect. This shows that not only do you value everyone's time, but you also want everyone to be focused on the goals for this meeting.
Therefore, having a moment of gathering and fellowship is not the same as conducting an organizational meeting. And some sessions may take 45 minutes but try to implement a schedule that focuses the conversation on what is essential. Sure, we may ask, "how are you?" but this ain't the moment for catching up, for that, have a gathering.
While some meetings require 45 minutes, others can be stand-up meetings to ensure everyone is walking toward the same endpoint. Specific questions within that 10–15-minute stand-up meeting geared towards the project's focus and vision can be super effective. Of course, the leader should follow up after that 15-minute talk. But if you call a meeting, please remember this is not a family reunion. Everyone here is investing a currency that we cannot get back, time.
And time is money, but no refunds are given.
