I have found that the best way to inspire another person is to follow the platinum rule. When engaging someone, there are two rules we can use, one is the golden rule, and the other is the platinum rule. The golden rule says we should treat others as we'd like to be treated. On the other hand, the platinum rule supposes we should treat people as they want. And the only way to fully apply the platinum rule is to establish a common ground or a relationship.
By establishing a relationship, one can have influence and inspire the other person. Therefore, I have tried to create a common ground and get to know the other individual, which allows me to encourage the person much more effectively. In trying to inspire, I try to use a language that resonates with the person, either written or verbal. However, I have also found that living out my core beliefs allows for more effective positioning in inspiring others.
When trying to inspire a person, I may have to address the elephant in the room. But when I have prayerfully considered my words, the person isn't irritated but rather inspired. Furthermore, by living out my core values and making those known, the other person is much more receptive when addressing the elephant in the room. Of course, sharing some challenges transparently I may have, allows my words and deeds to have more weight to them, as the other person understands I am just like them, flawed yet still pursuing greatness.
1 Timothy 4:12 is a Bible verse that has been an anchor for me to have harmony between actions and words. In this verse, Paul writes to Timothy, a young pastor, saying: "Don't let anyone despise your youth, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity." I have seen firsthand how I've been able to inspire others with my words and possibly have much more impact with my actions.
